Old Chaillot Pumping Station

Paris, France

: Pompe à feu de Chaillot

Water pumping station in Chaillot, in operation from 1781 to 1902.

The pumping station was a project of the Périer brothers. It conveyed water from the Seine to a higher reservoir that distributed it throughout the city. The project was originally launched on the Paris Stock Exchange under the name “Compagnie des eaux de Paris”, but was already in public hands by Johann Conrad Fischer’s time. Since 1781, the pump was served by a licensed steam engine from Boulton & Watt. The original engine was replaced by a more modern version around 1857. Around 1902, the pumping station ceased operation.
