: Boulton et Watt

British industrial company known for the manufacture of Watt’s steam engine.

The firm of Boulton & Watt was founded by Matthew Boulton and James Watt. It produced its steam engines at the Soho Manufactory and the Soho Foundry in Soho, Birmingham. Around 1800, sons James Watt Junior and Matthew Robinson Boulton took over management. In 1810, Scottish engineer and long-time employee William Murdoch became a business partner. In 1849 the firm changed its name to James Watt & Co. In 1895 it was sold to W & T Avery, a manufacturer of scales and measuring instruments. The steam engine business was discontinued.
