Former village near Paris, since 1659 formally part of the suburbs as faubourg; today part of the 16th arrondissement.

The quarter was a location for trade (esp. tanneries) and industry since the 17th century. For example, Chaillot was the site of the royal “Manufacture de la Savonnerie” and also the pumping station with the steam-powered water pump of the Périer brothers. They additionally operated an iron foundry there.
