Wattʼs Steam Engine

object, machine, apparatus, tool, technical instrument

A machine designed to generate power by means of atmospheric pressure.

This represented a further development of Thomas Newcomen’s atmospheric engine. In Watt’s machine, the condensation process was supported by adding a separate condensing cylinder to the main working cylinder so that there was always enough steam to operate the piston.

Also known as Watt’s atmospheric pump engine.
