gun cotton

A colloquial term for cellulose nitrate. A white, fibrous, odourless and tasteless mass. It is used in paints, glues, membranes, gunpowder, etc.

Gun cotton was discovered and first described in 1846 by Christian Friedrich Schönbein in Basel.
